Meet Your Pod Squad: Jennifer Thom

Welcome to another edition of Meet Your Pod Squad!

Today, we’re talking to Jennifer Thom, an account manager at ProudMouth. If you start a podcast with ProudMouth, there’s a good chance you will work closely with Jennifer, if not one of our other outstanding account managers.

Along with onboarding new clients, Jennifer reviews client files and podcast episodes to make sure our clients are on track and that they’re getting high quality content to help promote their podcast.

Let’s get to know Jennifer…

Describe a day in your life as an account manager at ProudMouth

First a cup of tea, then another cup of tea, and then I  respond to all of my clients’ emails and make sure I’ve answered any questions they have. This might involve scheduling recording time with one of our hosts and making edits to content material for a client.

My afternoons are spent reviewing clients’ podcasts, summaries, and social media calendars. If we’re onboarding a new client, I could spend part of my day setting up their channel, writing their podcast intro and outro draft, sending scripts to be recorded by a voice-over artist, and getting the podcast cover art started with our graphics department.

What do you enjoy about working at ProudMouth?

Exploring new ways to be more efficient for our team and for our clients. I really enjoy being part of the discovery process with clients, meeting our amazing clients, hearing their stories, and getting everything set up for them and the account managers. We have an amazing team here; everyone is willing to help at the drop of a hat, and I love being part of that and helping make someone’s day a little better.

What’s on your desk right now?

  • laptop
  • secondary screen
  • notebooks (yes, multiple) and pens
  • glasses
  • cup of tea
  • cell phone
  • a large mug full of pencil crayons and paint brushes (you never know when you might need to paint or color something)

What’s in your mug right now?

You will most always find black tea with cinnamon and Honey in my mug but there might be Hot Chocolate on occasion.

If you had a podcast, what would it be about?

Women’s health and getting older, things to avoid, and things to expect. How to deal with all the changes. I think it would be great to have women of all age groups on a show just for women at every stage of life with the main focus being after 40 –– what happens after 40, so that women know they are not in it alone.

Which books have made a lasting impact on you?

In my early teens I was introduced to Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta series. I have read every single book of this series probably twice, and I pre-order the new one every time one comes out. I love trying to figure out who the bad guy is within the first 50-75  pages or so, and then I speed read to the end to see if I am right.

Which TV shows do you like to watch?

I love watching football (The Bills are my team) and when the Toronto Raptors are playing, I am always watching. Otherwise, there is probably news, a comedy on, or a crime investigative show, like NCIS or Bones.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I love to paint and draw. Nothing special, I just find it very relaxing –– oh and repainting the rooms in my house, which drives my family crazy.

What kind of podcast episode keeps you listening to the end?

When the podcast feels real and the host and guests sound like they’re truly speaking to help and educate others on things they believe are important and feel that others will find important –– instead of  just reading facts that I could’ve read somewhere online. It doesn’t really matter what the subject is; as long as I can feel their passion, I will continue to listen.

What advice do you have for an industry expert who’s thinking about starting a podcast, but is scared out of their mind?

Just do it. You can only gain from putting your voice out there a little farther than your website and office.  All it takes is for one of your clients to listen and share it with a friend who could share it with another and in no time, 20 people you may have never met otherwise could potentially be your next client. Because now they know you, your business, and what you can offer them before you’ve even met them.

What’s one of the most enjoyable aspects of working with a client?

I enjoy getting to know each client. During the onboarding, I get to know their personality, passions, and their determination to share their expertise with others. I also learn a lot from each client. One in particular comes to mind. They inspired me to broaden my writing skills for social media posts and to speak with confidence.

When you think of our clients’ podcast names, which one might be your favorite? Why is that?

We have so many amazing podcast names for our clients with each one being unique to their individual podcast and theme. But if I had to pick one, it would be Everyday Is Saturday because this is exactly how I imagine retirement to be. Every morning starts with sitting on the dock with a cup of tea, watching the sun come up, and then returning to the same spot at the end of the day but maybe with a glass of wine.
