Meet Your Pod Squad: Jessica Brown

Welcome to another edition of Meet Your Pod Squad!

Today, we’re talking to Jessica Brown, our marketing editor at ProudMouth! A major component of her role involves overseeing and assessing the content and platform strategies for our company’s website, email campaigns, and social media

Let’s get to know Jessica…

(Listen to Jessica’s interview with our CRO, Matt Halloran, or keep reading!)

If you had a podcast, what would it be about?

I’d want to co-host a podcast with my doppelgänger (twin sister). Our podcast would be dedicated to talking about children’s literature, spanning from storybooks to novels. We would cover popular books, like “The Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch, and ones that we believe are underrated, like James and Deborah Howe’s  “Bunnicula” series. If we magically had access to authors, we’d interview them about the source of their inspiration, the writing and publishing process, and why that book needed to be written.

Which book has had a lasting impact on you?

“The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls. I’m actually rereading it at the moment. It’s an astonishing memoir, and I so admire Walls for being brave enough to share her story.

Which TV shows do you enjoy? Do you rewatch any of them?

I definitely rewatch shows!  Here’s what I’m enjoying lately:

  • “GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling”
  • “Ted Lasso”
  • “Mr. Mercedes”
  • “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
  • “The Haunting of Hill House”
  • “Ozark”
  • “Derry Girls”

Do you have a hidden talent?

Can I say thrift shopping? Maybe I have an eye for spotting vintage clothing and figurines, but it’s probably less about being talented and more about being patient and willing to search for gems. I also appreciate Goodwill’s mission, in particular, and I appreciate having the opportunity to contribute to their cause.

Please describe a day in your life as a marketing editor

My typical day involves a blend of project management, editing, and creating (mostly copywriting).

Some of my main tasks include overseeing our editorial calendar, which includes planning the content for ProudMouth’s social media accounts, email newsletters, blogs, and press releases. I also share oversight over both of our podcasts, “Be Your Own Loud” and the “Top Advisor Marketing Podcast,” with my colleagues. At the moment, I’m working on some special projects with specialists whom we’ve outsourced.

What do you enjoy about working at ProudMouth?

The spirit of collaboration. It’s not a competitive environment. I think we’re only getting better at realizing that it takes a team to create outstanding outcomes.

Who are your favorite marketers, writers, and thought leaders to follow on social media?

Harry Dry: Harry Dry runs Harry’s Marketing Examples on Twitter. He posts simple graphics that usually feature ads or marketing copy from real companies, like Colgate or T-Mobile, to demonstrate marketing lessons.

Alexa Heinrich: Alexa Heinrich is a digital accessibility expert. We were so lucky to have her as a guest on the “Top Advisor Marketing Podcast.” I can’t recommend her newsletter enough. Focusing on social media, Alexa shares digital accessibility wins and fails, the newest developments in social media accessibility, and empowers her readers to do better.

Emily McGuire: Emily McGuire is an email marketing and customer lifecycle strategist. Her copywriting brims with personality and her empathy for her audience. She also has a knack for writing with humor, which I love! (Check out Emily’s awesome episode of “Top Advisor Marketing Podcast”: How to Win Over Prospects With Email Campaigns .)

Derek Pollard: Derek Pollard is a leading content specialist with a decades-long background in curriculum development and educational training and in the editing and publishing industry. I admire the way Derek uses his LinkedIn profile as a platform to lift up other voices. Through his posts, Derek has introduced me to people and organizations who’ve impacted my work and creative writing, such as the Downtown Writers Center and Lounge Writers (Lounge Writers is run by the phenomenal Oksana Marafioti).

Which social media trend are you totally on board with?

I’m not sure if this qualifies as a trend, but I’m a big fan of self-contained, text-only LinkedIn posts that don’t include external links, like this one by our co-founder Kirk Lowe. These posts are meant to educate, entertain, or inspire your audience while introducing them to your expertise.

5 ways to generate content for text-only posts:

  1. Pull ideas from your podcast transcripts
  2. Post bullet points and short paragraphs from your blogs
  3. Turn your social media comments into standalone posts
  4. Write a post that introduces yourself to your audience (see this example from our CRO Matt Halloran)
  5. Share your origin story (get inspiration from this post by Matt Halloran)

Happy writing!
